W hen your own unique combination o f the elements is maintained, your health is good. But when the combination is upset, disease may result. For exam ple, an increased Earth com ponent can result in obesity; increased W ater can lead to edem a; increased Fire can cause fever, ulcers, and burning sensations such as heartburn, conjunctivitis or burning urination.

Subtle changes in the mental faculties m ay also appear when the equilibrium is upset. For example, an increase o f the Air element m ay cause fear and anxiety; increase o f Fire element can lead to anger and hate; increase o f Earth m ay bring depression and dullness. All five elements play an important role in the form ation o f the structure o f the tissues and in m aintaining their functions.

Relating this to cause and effect— function is the cause, structure is the effect. The five elements form the basic foundation o f Ayurveda out o f which com e the three doshas— vata, pitta, kapha.

Soul Atman W e have discussed the five elements. N o w w e will shift our attention to soul, the sixth o f the nine causative substances according to Vaisheshika. A ccord in g to Vaisheshika, soul is eternal; u niversal; o f tw o kinds, in d ivid u a l a n d su prem e jivatman and param atm an ; inferred; and indivisible.

It is a substratum or phenom enon o f Consciousness. Consciousness evolves because soul or spirit exists. Individual souls do not perceive other souls but they do infer their existence.

Sankhya talks about Purusha, which is pure awareness, the highest principle. M odem science takes seriously only what can be seen, measured, or put on the observation table. Self can exist without body, Self can exist without mind. In a deep sleep, one forgets the body and mind.

The Self is still there enjoying the pure presence, the pure existence. Without that Self, consciousness is not possible. Atman cannot be seen but it can be experienced. It cannot be measured but one can merge into it. Mind Manas The seventh causative substance is mind, manas. Mind is universal, atomic or indivisible, and is not directly perceivable. Mind directs experience. It is awareness functioning through the senses. Mind directs awareness to an object or goal and then perceives the outer object.

For example, the cellular mind atomic mind is subconscious. T h e subconscious mind w orking through the autonomic nervous system directs most o f our bodily functions. Th e beating o f the heart, the breathing o f the lungs, and the m ovem ent o f liver cells, cells o f the intestinal wall, o f the ovaries and fallopian tubes, are all under autonomic control, which is the subconscious mind.

Actually, there is no line o f dem arcation betw een the conscious and subconscious mind. Mind is one, but it operates on levels that w e call conscious and subconscious. For the convenience o f understanding w e have created this division. Mind is a w onderfu l veh icle. M editation is probin g into the subconscious. In m editation, thoughts o f the past com e up, feelings and em otions surface. W hen w e m editate, our cells b e c o m e a w are and consciou s o f thoughts, o f stress bein g released.

W e can begin to talk, share, and communicate with each cell. Time Kala T h e n ext cau sative substance is tim e, kala, which is m o vem en t and ch an ge. T im e is a fo rc e that can p rodu ce change and w e use it as a marker for change. W hen w e measure time, w e measure change.

Th e function o f the doshas is also related to the time of day. The time o f the day produces a different style o f function. Tim e is a cause o f change, creation, maintenance, and destruction. The Earth rotates on its axis and also revolves around the sun. W h en the Earth com pletes one rotation, it is on e day. W hen the Earth completes one revolution around the sun, it is. Tim e can be measured in terms o f prana. One prana is one breath. One breath is one inspiration and one expiration.

Fifteen prana is said to make one minute; prana, one hour; 21, prana, one day. Th e faster the rate o f respiration, the shorter the span o f life.

Th e slower the rate o f respiration, the longer the span o f life. Th ere is ch ronological time and there is psychological time. Thought takes place in psychological time. Therefore, thought is the linear m ovem ent o f time, because o f the sequential change o f events.

Psychological time is the m ovem ent o f thought. If one enters the inner space beyond thought, one goes beyond psychological time. Direction Dig T h e last o f the nine causative factors is direction, dig.

Direction is an important concept in Ayurveda. Up, down, and lateral movements describe doshic function and are referred to as dosha gati. Internal and external m ovem en ts also g iv e a sense of direction. East, west, north, and south, are four directions also used by Ayurveda. East is hot, sharp, bright. It has more solar energy. In the northern hemisphere, the more you go to the north, the colder it is. The more you go to the south, the hotter it is. Ayurveda has used direction for healing purposes— for example, selecting the proper directional axis a person should sleep.

Southeast is the direction o f Fire, southwest the direction o f Earth, northw est the direction o f A ir and northeast the direction o f Water. Ether is the center. This is the natural order of direction and the elements. Therefore, the kitchen should be located in the southeast part o f the house in o rd er to take advantage o f the Fire element.

Earth will bring sound sleep in the southwest portion. Fresh air should enter through the northwest. T h e W ater elem en t is lo ca ted in the northeast, providing a good space for meditation and an altar.

The middle area, Ether, should be left empty. This Vedic understanding o f arrangement is called uastu shilpa shastra.

T h is is a philosophy o f attaining freedom through the perform ance o f du ty or d h a rm a a c tio n in the ligh t o f a w a re n e s s. It is a positive w ay o f logic and Mimamsa proves that there is a G od. Mimamsa emphasizes the teaching o f the Vedas from the perspective o f rituals.

Purva M im am sa is based on the initial teachings o f the Vedas, while Uttara Mimamsa uses the later, higher teachings o f Vedanta, which are the Upanishads. Mimamsa believes that the ultimate creator o f the universe is G od and that G o d is eternal, timeless, pure existence. It says G o d is both personal, incarnating in human form to bring peace, love, and order, and impersonal as Brahma. Mimamsa believes in m any deities and says that each deity has som e significant blessing to offer mankind.

In Mlmamsa, G od as a universal being and as a totality is here in the present. G o d is reflected in every human being as the sky is reflected in water. In the ocean there is a vast sky. In the river there is a tiny sky. In a small container o f water there is a ye t sm aller re fle c tio n. M lm am sa says that re fle c tio n is incarnation. In some persons the reflection o f G od is 90 percent. In other persons it m ay be only 10 percent.

Mlmamsa says that in reality every individual reflects G od. Every individual is a complete phenom enon, but the completeness o f this individual reflection is difficult to realize. Mlmamsa says that to understand our individuality, to truly know ourselves, is to know G od.

Mlmamsa says there is a lower self, jlvatman, and a higher Self, paramatman. Through meditation the lower self merges into the higher Self. Th ese teachings include many m ethods and means o f attaining G o d through rituals, cerem on ies, and fasting.

A lso included are instructions for different ways o f puja and sacrifice. This philosophy is quite c o m p le x. A y u r v e d a has a c c e p te d M lm am sa fo r h e a lin g purposes and incorporates rituals such as burning candles, offering flowers, sprinkling holy water, and burning incense, all o f which have healing power. Th e fifth philosophy is Y o g a.

Y o g a means union— the union o f the lower self with the higher Self, 'the union o f man with God. It is a practical discipline for knowing the self. Y o g a comes from yuf that means to unite. Thought is a barrier, an obstacle, and a block. Y o ga is one o f the ways to go beyond. Patanjali was the pioneer who organized yo gic discipline as a science through his Y o g a Sutras and Ayurveda has accepted this philosophy for healing purposes.

Th ere are variou s schools o f Y o g a — Bhakti Y o g a path o f devotion , Jnana Y o g a path o f knowledge , Karma Y o g a path o f action , etc. Yam a five restraints 2. Niyama five observances 3. Asana postures 4. Pratyahara withdrawal o f senses 6. Dharana focusing attention on an object or mantra; one-pointed awareness6 7. Dhyana meditation; a continuous flow o f attention without words or thoughts; moment-to-moment awareness without judgment 8.

Th e gogasana is a w ay o f bringing awareness into action in a particular position. Control o f the mind is established by quieting and stilling the mind, so that the object o f perception becom es the Self. In the broadest sense, Y o g a brings attention back to the Self and creates the value o f self-referral. W hen one sits in the lotus pose, one becomes like a lotus. W hen in a cobra pose, one becom es like a cobra. W hen in a tree pose, o n e becom es like a tree.

T h ere is a com m union betw een body, mind and consciousness. Standing on one leg for 10 minutes, 15 minutes, even one hour, will bring siddhi, the benefit o f that asana. Every asana has a siddhi, a benefit, which creates bioch em ical changes in the body. Patanjali m ade a science o f yo ga and the ultimate end o f yo ga is samadhi, the merging o f the lower self into the higher Self, where body, mind and spirit becom e one, and that is the state o f liberation.

Ayurveda classifies yoga asanas according to vata, pitta, and kapha, utilizing yogic science for healing purposes. Th e sixth philosophy is Vedanta, which was established b y B a d a raya n a.

Knowledge is necessary for learning, inquiring and investigating. If o n e has trem endous kn ow led ge, that kn ow led ge blinds. Th e person becom es prejudiced and preoccupied with the knowledge.

W e all h ave to read our o w n b o o k , w hich is our d a ily operatin g consciou sness. W e h a ve to read ou rselves, our thoughts,. This can be likened to the flow of o il on the head in the panchakarma procedure called shirodhdra. Vedan ta is a p rofou n d p h ilosop h y that A yu rved a has accepted. This philosophy is also referred to as upanishad. Upa m ean s n ea r, nish a d m e a n s to sit in th e v ic in ity o f the enlightened one, the teacher, master, guru and listen to him or her without any doubt, delusion or comparison.

Vedanta, the entire teaching, is upanishad. Vedanta uses another w ord for G od called Brahma, which means the expansion o f consciousness. Th e only thing that exists in Vedanta is Consciousness. There is nothing else. There is a ten den cy tow ard dualism in Sankhya and Vaisheshika. H ow ever, in Vedanta there is only one principle, and that is called Consciousness. But before Hubble, several thousand years ago, Badarayana discovered this same truth and that is why he called the universe brahmanda.

Brahmanda means the golden egg that is expanding. A n d a means egg, brah means expansion— the expanding egg. Badarayana also discovered that there is a universal Consciousness in which w e all share. W e all share in one Consciousness even as w e all share the light and that is what B adarayana was telling us.

A yu rv ed a has accepted his philosophy for healing purposes.! According to Buddhism there are 12 causes o f suffering:. Avidya Ignorance 2. Samskara Past Impressions 3. Vignana Initial Consciousness 4.

Shadayatana Six Organs o f Cognition 6. Sparsha Contact o f Senses with Objects 7. Trushna Thirst to Enjoy 9. Upadan Mental Attachment Bhaka Becoming Janma Birth Right Perception and Observation 2.

Right Thinking 3. Right Speaking 4. Right Conduct 5. Right Living 6. Right Doing 7. Right Mindfulness 8. Right Meditation. Lord Buddha was born in India about BC. H e was highly enlightened. H e never used the word God. H e felt G od as a pure P resen ce, pure Existence. Buddhist p h ilosop h y encourages entering into that pure existence by emptying our minds o f their contents.

Buddha said that in order to hold the contents o f our minds and our consciousness, w e have had to establish d e fin ite b o rd e rs a ro u n d them. C o n ta in ers and contained are the same and w e live in the tiny enclosures we ca ll c o n s c io u s n e s s. B u d d h a sa id th a t if w e e m p ty our consciousness o f its contents, then w e dissolve our borders.

At that m om en t w e en ter nirvana, w hich is the state o f pure Existence. Buddha called this state nothingness or no-mind state. W e h ave also discussed Buddhism. Th e creators o f these philosophies were great pioneers and have given us profou nd insights into the truth o f life. Each o f these philosophies has contributed to the thought o f Ayurveda. The body is a material machine and this machine should be corrected.

This approach is reflected in modern physics, if:- Mlmamsa is about action, the path o f life, freedom through performance o f duty dharma. Its teachings include methods and means o f attaining G od through rituals, ceremonies, and fasting, if;- Vedanta gave profound thinking to Ayurveda about eternal, changeless Brahma, the ultimate achievement o f each human being. T o achieve that goal each person needs perfect health, if;- Ayurveda uses Y o g a therapeutically and indeed each of these systems has great value.

Shad Darshan. And finally, Buddhism. Buddha says everything is going to end. Do not worry about disease, because disease is going to end. H ave patience. Buddhist philosophy says there is suffering and a simple w ay to go beyond suffering is to have patience, to give time for samprapti to eradicate itself.

That is what Buddhism has given to Ayurveda. In chapter one w e considered the Shad Darshan, the six philosophies, which Ayurveda accepts as a basis for its thought. W e also briefly discussed the five elements. In this chapter w e will g o into greater detail about the elem ents and com e to a better understanding o f h ow these basic principles lie at the heart o f Ayurvedic science.

W e will first try to understand the inanimate world and will then connect to the animate world through doshic theory. The purpose o f this approach is to bridge a m odel o f physics to a model o f physiology through gunas universal attributes and karmas actions. Th e rishis p e rc e iv e d that in the b egin n in g the w orld existed in an unmanifested state o f Consciousness, avyakta— meaning unmanifest.

From that state the subtle vibrations o f the cosmic, soundless sound A u m m anifested. From the subtle vibration o f A u m cam e the Ether or S p a ce elem en t. This ethereal elem ent then began to m o ve and through its subtle movements created the Air element, which is Ether in action. The m ovem ent o f Air produced friction and through friction. Particles o f this heat com bin ed to form intense light and from this light the Fire element emerged.

Thus, Ether produced Air and it was Air that further manifested into Fire. Th e heat o f Fire dissolved and liquefied certain ethereal elem en ts, fo rm in g W a te r that then so lid ified to fo rm the molecules o f Earth. From Earth, all physical bodies for organic living beings w ere created, including both the plant and animal kingdoms.

Earth w as also the origin o f all in orga n ic substances that comprise the mineral kingdom. Thus, out of. The five basic elements exist in all matter. Water provides th e cla ssic e x a m p le : th e s o lid sta te o f w a te r, ice, is a manifestation o f the Earth principle.

Latent heat Fire in the ice liquefies it, revealing the W ater principle. Eventually water turns into steam, expressing the Air principle. The steam disappears into Ether or Space. All five originated from the energy within Cosmic Consciousness and all five are present in all matter in the universe. Thus, energy and matter are one.

Man is a microcosm o f the universe and, therefore, the five basic elements present in all matter also exist within each individual. In the human body, many spaces are aspects o f the E ther o r S p a c e elem en t. T h e spaces in the m outh, nose, gastroin testin al tract, resp ira to ry tract, a b d o m en , thorax, capillaries, and tissues are all examples o f Space.

Air is the elem ent o f m ovem ent. All m ovem ents involve Air as an element, because it alone m oves everything. Any time there is m otion , it m eans A ir is present. T h e nature o f the elem ents them selves determ in es the nature o f ph ysiology. Within the human body, Air is present in the pulsations o f the heart and the expansion and contraction o f the lungs. Under a microscope, even a single cell can be seen to m ove.

Response to a stimulus is the m o v e m e n t o f a fferen t and efferen t nerve impulses, which are sensory and motor movements respectively.
